Have Status. Shop Indigenous.

HaveStatus is a free community resource that helps Indigenous people across Canada find tax-exempt purchases, Indigenous-owned businesses, and authentic Indigenous goods — saving money and supporting Indigenous economies.

HaveStatus was born from a simple daily moment: standing at the till and saying "I have status." We built this so every Status card holder can instantly find businesses that honour that card — no awkward explanations, no missed savings, just community supporting community.

What you'll find

  • Tax-free fuel stations — on-reserve gas bars where status card holders save on fuel tax and PST/HST
  • Indigenous-owned hotels & resorts — stay at places that give back to communities
  • Restaurants & cafes — Indigenous-owned eateries with traditional and contemporary cuisine
  • Indigenous goods — authentic art, clothing, carvings, and products by Indigenous artisans
  • Tours & services — Indigenous-led cultural experiences and wildlife tours
  • Retail stores & businesses — shops and companies that employ Indigenous people, offering additional tax benefits for status card holders

Tax exemption quick guide

Who qualifies: Registered Indians (status card holders) under the Indian Act are exempt from certain taxes on goods purchased or delivered on-reserve.

What's exempt: Varies by province. Generally includes PST/HST on goods purchased on-reserve and provincial fuel tax at on-reserve stations. Always bring your status card.

Note: Tax rules vary by province. HaveStatus provides general guidance — always confirm with the business. This is not legal or tax advice.

Other exemptions

Buying a vehicle on reserve: Most auto dealerships can complete the purchase tax-exempt when delivered on-reserve. Status card holders are exempt from PST/HST on the vehicle purchase price and registration fees. Bring your status card and ensure the delivery address is on-reserve.

Amazon.ca reimbursements: Amazon has an online process to refund sales tax on purchases delivered on-reserve. Status card holders can submit claims through your Amazon account — look for "Tax Exemption Program" in Help settings, or visit Amazon's Indigenous Tax Exemption help page. Some provinces also allow direct exemption at checkout with proper documentation on file.

Working on reserve: Employment income earned on-reserve by status Indians is exempt from federal and provincial income tax under Section 87 of the Indian Act. The employer must be located on-reserve, and the work must be performed there. Off-reserve work generally does not qualify.
